February 7, 2022 Portland City Council Meeting Recap

Newsflash 2022

During its February 7, 2022 meeting, the Portland City Council unanimously passed an amendment banning the sale of flavored tobacco. The amendment bans the sale of flavored tobacco and nicotine products, including natural, synthetic, and menthol tobacco products. The ban goes into effect on June 1, 2022. This will give ample time for the City’s Public Health Tobacco Prevention Team to develop and disseminate a retailer campaign and other educational resources.

The Council also voted 7-2 (Pelletier and Zarro opposed) to repeal the City’s current mask mandate, which applies to all indoor public places. The repeal takes effect 10 days after Council action, which is February 17. Repealing this mask mandate does not preclude the Council from considering mask mandate proposals in the future.

The repeal of the citywide mask mandate does not prohibit businesses or organizations from continuing to impose their own mask requirements should they choose to do so.
