[ARCHIVED] Portland Seeks New City Clerk

portland news

The City of Portland will soon be seeking a new City Clerk following the news that Katherine Jones is set to retire on July 1, 2022. Jones formally submitted her intentions on December 6, 2021, and cited her eagerness to spend more time with her family, especially her young grandchildren. Mayor Kate Snyder plans to expand the scope of the existing Search subcommittee to now include a search process for both the City Manager and Clerk positions.

“I want to thank Kathy for her 13 years of service to the City of Portland,” said Mayor Kate Snyder. “She has been a devoted public servant, one who has faithfully helped the City provide fair and accessible elections as well as numerous city vital records and services. I’m so happy that she will soon be afforded the opportunity to spend more time with her family. My hope is that we can bring a new clerk on board ahead of her retirement date so we can ensure a smooth transition.”

Earlier in September of this year, Clerk Jones received the Clerk of the Year Award from the Maine Town and City Clerk’s Association (MTCCA). Each year, the award recognizes the professional service and dedication by a municipal clerk to his/her community, and one who promotes the cause of good local government.

Kathy Jones was appointed as Portland City Clerk in 2011, after previously serving as the City’s Elections Administrator since 2009. She is currently Vice Chair of the MTCCA’s Legislative Policy Committee, and served as President of MTCCA from 2018 to 2020. She also served on the US Elections Commission Board from 2015 to 2020.
