New Round of Business Assistance Grants & Relaunch of Modified Microenterprise Grant

portland news

The City of Portland is launching a new round of the Business Assistance Grant Program for Job Creation with grants of $10,000 per full-time job created, up to $20,000 per business. The purpose of this program is to create jobs for low/moderate income individuals by providing startups and existing businesses with grants that can be used for a range of expenses (such as rent, utilities, payroll, equipment, inventory and supplies). Permanent full-time jobs must be filled by low/moderate income individuals after the grant is approved. Applications are due no later than December 1, 2021 at 3:00 pm, but earlier submissions are welcome. Requests for these grants are expected to exceed the program funding of close to $300,000; the process is anticipated to be competitive.

The City is also relaunching the Microenterprise Grant Program which has increased eligibility to businesses in two ways: small businesses that opened after the pandemic started in March 2020 are now eligible to apply, as well as businesses with 0-3 employees. The Microenterprise Program offers grants up to $5,000 for businesses whose owners are low/moderate income. This program does not have a deadline for applications as they will be accepted when received. Portland businesses are encouraged to apply early since funds remaining for this program are limited.

More information about these programs and the application process are available at portlandmaine.gov/BusinessFinancing. Questions about these programs can be directed to Nelle Hanig, Business Programs Manager in the Housing and Economic Development Department at nrh@portlandmaine.gov or 207-756-8019.

Decisions on grant awards will be made by the Portland Development Corporation, the City’s loan and grant board. The Job Creation Grant is funded with the City of Portland’s Community Development Block Grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Funding for the Microenterprise Grant Program is funded through COVID-CDBG.
