[ARCHIVED] New External Absentee Ballot Drop Box Now Available Outside Merrill Auditorium

A new external ballot drop box has been installed for those wishing to drop off their completed absentee ballots. It is located outside of the Merrill Auditorium entrance for 24/7 ballot returns. Please remember to sign the back of the envelope before depositing it in the ballot box. As long as your envelope is signed, the voter or a family member can drop it off for you. Absentee ballots must be returned to the city/town in which you reside. You cannot use the Merrill Auditorium drop box if you do not have a Portland ballot. Likewise, Portland residents must use this box and not one in another town.

In-person absentee voting is currently going on now in the City Clerk’s temporary office space in the Merrill Auditorium lobby via the Myrtle Street entrance. Regular hours are 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Two Saturdays will be offered on October 17 and 24 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM for in-person absentee voting and dropping off absentee ballots plus voter registration.

On Thursday October 29, the Office will be open until 7:00 PM for in-person absentee voting, dropping off ballots, and registering to vote.

The last day to in-person absentee vote is Friday, October 30, 2020. Please wear a mask when in-person voting. Absentee ballots must be returned by 8:00 PM on Election Day. You must return absentee ballots via mail or to the Merrill Auditorium ballot box, and not to your normal polling place.

You can check the status of your absentee ballot request by using the Secretary of State’s new tracking system. You can also use this tool to track your ballot once you have returned it.

If you have requested an absentee ballot and you have now decided that you want to vote absentee in-person, please wait for your ballot to arrive in the mail and then bring your ballot with you. If you no longer wish to absentee vote, then you can vote at your polling place on Election Day as long as you have not returned your absentee ballot.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2020, and all polling places will be open on that day from 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM. Polling locations will look different in light of COVID-19 safety measures. This means that booths will be spread out, hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray will be plentiful, and election workers will have plexiglass barriers, face shields, and masks. Voters are encouraged to wear a mask or cloth face covering when voting.

Absentee ballots can be requested online, by mail, or by calling 207-874-8677.
