West End Neighborhood Geotechnical Investigation

The Department of Public Works will be conducting geotechnical investigations at various locations in the West End Neighborhood beginning Thursday October 24, 2019. The contractor, Northern Test Boring, will have a drill rig and staff onsite to complete the work.

This work is being conducted to determine the feasibility of installing stormwater infiltration systems as a method of managing stormwater runoff in neighborhood. The feasibility will be determined by completing a soil analysis and infiltration study at several locations identified as possible project areas throughout the neighborhood. The intent of the proposed stormwater infiltration systems is to reduce the amount of stormwater runoff entering the neighborhood’s combined sewer systems to improve the system’s capacity and help mitigate combined sewer overflows (CSO) into Casco Bay. A combined sewer is a sewer that conveys both sanitary sewer flows and stormwater runoff flows. During heavy rains, flows in the system exceed the capacity of the pipes causing CSO into the harbor and sewer backups in the system.

The project is currently in the conceptual design phase. More information will be released as the project gets closer to final design.
