Portland Celebrates National Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 18

NEWS ALERT

What: Portland’s National Bike to Work Day 2018 Celebration

When: May 18th, 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM

Where: Monument Square, Portland Maine

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine (BCM) and the City of Portland’s Planning & Urban Development Department are co-sponsoring Portland's annual celebration of National Bike to Work Day 2018 on Friday, May 18th.

At the Monument Square celebration there will be refreshments, a photo booth and plenty of bike-related swag to give away. BCM staff will be on hand with information about how to be a safer bicycle commuter, membership information, a mechanics stand and tools for quick adjustments as well as coupons for coffee from Others! Coffee.

“Biking to work has a lot of positives,” Bicycle Coalition of Maine Executive Director John Williams said. “Of course, there’s the physical benefit, but riding your bike to work is great way to save some money because you don’t have to pay for parking and you aren’t using any gas. If your commute is only a few miles, you’ll probably find that it’s just as quick, if not faster, to ride your bike than it is to drive.”

Thanks to City Fit! – the city’s employee wellness program - all city employees who ride their bikes to work on Friday will receive a $5 token to the Portland Farmers Market.

Portland Planning staff will have maps and other information about upcoming city projects and initiatives to improve bicycling in Portland.

You can find more information and tips about bicycle commuting at http://www.bikemaine.org/biking-resources/bike-commuting.

At a “Breakfast and Bikes” event that same morning, staff and volunteers from the Portland Gear Hub will have a mechanics stand and tools, free air set up outside A&C Grocery (131 Washington Avenue), where they’ll be cooking up some hot breakfast treats, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
