Final Paving for Market Street Project Scheduled for May 7th & 8th

paving alert

The Department of Public Works (DPW) expects to complete its Market Street Paving Project during the next two weeks. The project area extends from Congress St. to Milk St. on Market Street. Construction work will entail localized pavement repairs, curb and sidewalk improvements, adjustments to the iron frames on manholes and catch basins, and final paving.

The DPW hired Glidden Excavating & Paving, Inc. of Gorham, Maine to build this project. Glidden is scheduled to do final paving on Monday May 7th and Tuesday May 8th. They are scheduled to start paving at 5 AM on these two days, with a goal of finishing paving early in the day to allow traffic flow to be restored. Rainfall on scheduled paving days may delay progress and affect the schedule.

Glidden will post temporary “No Parking” signs on Market Street between Congress Street and Milk Street, and on adjacent streets in their work zone, to facilitate construction and traffic flow. These parking restrictions will apply to daytime work on Thursdays and Fridays from 6 AM through 7 PM, and on Monday May 7th and Tuesday May 8th from 5 AM through 7 PM. Cars parked in temporary no parking zones may be towed, at their owner’s expense, if they are in the way of the paving equipment.  Parking during overnight hours and weekends will not be restricted. Access to businesses on Market Street will be maintained throughout construction, and traffic flow will be maintained on Market Street as much as possible.

Individuals with questions about this project can contact the Public Works Department by phone at 874-8801, by seeking out the City staff inspector or Glidden’s supervisor on the construction site, or by e-mailing to the following City staff e-mail addresses:,, or
