news alert

Peggy Akers, who has been a nurse practitioner for the City of Portland’s Public Health Division since 1995, has been chosen as the Maine recipient of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners 2018 State Award for Excellence.

During her time with the City, Ms. Akers has seen and treated patients through the Healthcare for the Homeless program, the Preble Street Teen Clinic, and the STD Clinic when it was first located at Preble Street, then City Hall, and finally where it now resides at the India Street Health Center. She volunteers her time at the Portland Community Free Clinic, located at the India Street Health Center. She’s also taught at the University of Southern Maine’s College of Nursing.

Says Ms. Akers, “I love what I do and I feel so lucky to do it. I am extremely honored to be recognized among this amazing community of nurse practitioners. I used to teach some of them and it is truly a privilege to be part of the community and see my students go on to do great work.”

Nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner advocates, and recipients of the prestigious AANP 2018 State Award for Excellence, will be honored at an awards ceremony and reception held during the AANP 2018 National Conference June 26-July 1, 2018, in Denver, CO.  Ms. Akers will be among the recipients honored.

The State Award for Nurse Practitioner Excellence, founded in 1991, recognizes a nurse practitioner (NP) in a State who demonstrates excellence in practice.  In 1993, the State Award for Nurse Practitioner Advocate was added to recognize the efforts of individuals who have made a significant contribution towards increasing awareness and recognition of NPs.
